Port Tobacco Courthouse
8430 Commerce Street
Port Tobacco, MD 20677

Join us for a 30 minute powerful documentary about plastic straws and other forms of plastic pollution that inundate our waterways and oceans. The film illustrates how individuals, groups, and businesses around the globe are reducing plastic straw use through education, collaboration, policy development and utilization of non-plastic alternatives. With colorful opening animation narrated by Oscar winner Tim Robbins, STRAWS is entertaining as well as educational.

This is a joint program hosted by Southern Maryland Audubon Society and the Port Tobacco River Conservancy.  The event will also feature our local Ocean Guardian students from J.C. Parks Elementary, further emphasizing the harm plastics are causing to our environment. Information about our recent Charles County ban on plastic straws will also be made available. Light refreshments and mingling start at 7 p.m. Public invited. Free event. Inquiries to Lynne Wheeler at somdaudubon@yahoo.com or 301-751-8097 (prefer text).

The Port Tobacco Eagles Have an Egg!

Eagle on nest with egg

The eagles nesting in Port Tobacco River Park laid their first egg on Thursday, January 31! Our friends at Southern Maryland Audubon Society tell us that bald eagles commonly raise two young and to keep an eye out for another egg on Sunday or Monday. The gestation period is about 35 days, so with any luck we will have chicks in early March! You can watch the eagles live at wildstreaming.com

Meanwhile, over 200 suggestions were submitted to the naming contest sponsored by Charles County Parks and Recreation. The submissions will be reviewed by community partners, including representatives from PTRC and SMAS, and the top five pairs of names will go to public vote during February 6 through 13. The name of the contest winner will be placed on a plaque on the Eagle Observation Deck at the Port Tobacco River Park, and the winner will receive a Charles County Recreation, Parks, and Tourism prize pack.
