PTRC and many volunteers are in the process of planting 8,800 trees along a stream that feeds the Port Tobacco River at the corner of Mitchell and Hawthorne Roads. On a very hot April 10, 65 environmental students from Westlake, McDonough, and North Point High Schools and 10 chaperones joined PTRC members to plant about 2,500 trees. Then on Saturday, April 13, Boy Scout Troop 424 from Waldorf, organized by aspiring Eagle Scout Nathan Radtke (pictured above), planted about 2,500 more. As part of his challenge, Nathan had to organize everything the Boy Scouts would need for survival. So he arranged for Starbucks to donate coffee, Apple Spice Junction to donate lunch, and also got donations of bug spray, trash bags, and gloves for the volunteers. (Video Available) |

Thanks to excellent planning by Jerry Forbes, 15 PTRC members enjoyed an interesting visit to the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) in Solomon’s, MD, on Friday, April 5. CBL is an environmental research facility of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) and is the principal institution for advanced environmental research and graduate studies within the University of Maryland System. Since tour size was limited, CBL organized two tours for us—one morning and one afternoon. The two groups met for lunch between tours at Solomon’s Pier Restaurant. |
