January 2026: If You Love Our Amazing River, Join Us

Winter brings a quieter rhythm to the Port Tobacco River, but the work of protecting it continues.

The Port Tobacco River Conservancy remains focused on what matters most: listening to our community, understanding the health of our watershed, and planning a year’s worth of events, activities and initiatives to protect the river we all share.

In Memoriam: Remembering Dr. Jerry Forbes

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Dr. Jerry Forbes. Jerry was a past president of PTRC and a member for many years. He was a dedicated advocate for our local environment and a cherished friend to the Port Tobacco River.

His commitment to conservation and his passion for the health of our watershed left an indelible mark on the Conservancy. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Jerry’s legacy will live on through the continued protection of the waters he loved so dearly.

Have You Taken Our River Health Survey?

The health of the Port Tobacco River is shaped by the people who live within its watershed.

Our River Health Survey is an opportunity for residents of Port Tobacco, La Plata, Pomfret, Waldorf and St. Charles to share what they see, what they experience and what they care about when it comes to our river.

Your insights help guide our priorities and shape future projects that reflect real community needs.

As a thank-you, everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a drawing to win a free pair of AirPods.

Volunteers Needed for Water Monitoring

From May through September, a group of dedicated volunteers grabs their sample bottles, notebooks, kayaks and paddles before heading out to check on the health of the Port Tobacco River.

By tracking indicators like dissolved oxygen, salinity and water clarity, we gain a clearer picture of how the river is changing over time. This information helps identify trends, spot potential concerns early and ensure the Port Tobacco River is healthy and safe for all of us.

We’re actively seeking new volunteers to carry out this effort starting in the spring. If you’ve already volunteered, thank you! We’ll have more information for you soon.
