Your Chance to Comment on the Future of Chapel Point State Park

Beach at Chapel Point SP

The Maryland Park Service and the Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism have been working together to develop a strategic management partnership plan for a portion of Chapel Point State Park. The draft plan is now available at http://dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/southern/chapelpoint.aspx .

Highlights of the plan include:

  • Repairing and maintaining existing roads and the park entrance
  • Supporting historic uses of the park by waterfowl hunters and fishermen
  • Evaluating and improving bird habitat, forest habitat, and water quality
  • Assessing areas of shoreline erosion that may need protection
  • Working with the Piscataway tribe to build on their interest in and connection to Chapel Point
  • Integrating recreational and tourism activities with Port Tobacco Village and Port Tobacco River Park
  • Maintaining and promoting passive recreation activities such as biking, beach-combing, kayaking, and bird watching
  • Improving staff presence and discouraging unauthorized activities
  • Addressing issues with trash and illegal dumping

Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of the process for improving the habitat and recreational potential of this beautiful park. Take a look at the full plan and submit your comments to Park Manager Patrick Bright of the Maryland Park Service at pat.brightjr@maryland.gov until October 19, 2016.

Cleanup volunters

Join us from 9 to 11 am for the last cleanup of the season. The August cleanup crew recovered lots of trash, including two computers. We also saw some lovely wildflowers.

We will provide gloves, trash/recycle bags, drinking water and snacks. The park is located at 8160 Pisces Rd, Port Tobacco MD 20677.

Please protect yourself from poison ivy. Also, if you would like to avoid the worst of the potholes, park on the farm road and walk down to the beach.

Our next cleanup will be Saturday, August 20

July’s cleanup crew had plenty of work to do, and with so many people enjoying the park we expect the August cleanup to be just as big a job.

Your Chance to Show Some Love for Chapel Point State Park

Beach at Chapel Point SP

Please Come to the Public Information Meeting on August 4

Chapel Point is one of the most beautiful parks in Charles County, and is the only public access point on the Port Tobacco River. PTRC will be attending this meeting to advocate for improvements to the facilities there to improve public access and enjoyment for everyone who loves to swim, fish, kayak, boat, or otherwise enjoy the park. This is your chance to let the State and the County know what improvements you would like to see.

The Maryland Park Service and the Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism will hold a public meeting to discuss a strategic management partnership plan for Chapel Point State Park on Thursday, Aug. 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the County Commissioners’ Meeting Room at the Charles County Government Building (200 Baltimore Street, La Plata). Citizens wishing to make oral or written comments are encouraged to attend the meeting. Chapel Point State Park is located off of Chapel Point Road in Port Tobacco.

A partnership with the Maryland Park Service and the Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism is being proposed to enhance services for increased visitation and interest in the park’s existing and potential amenities. State and county staff will provide background information about the park along with general goals for the partnership at the public meeting.

The public is asked to identify specific management objectives, operational measures, and infrastructure improvements that would enhance the park. Following the open house, a strategic management partnership plan will be developed to facilitate the proposed partnership using public input.
